Establishing a lawn
The substrate and its structure
The appearance and condition of a lawn depend on the substrate preparation. The most important for the development and strength of the sod is the top layer which reaches up to a depth of approx. 15 cm. Careful cleaning of the surface from weeds, stones and rubble is the first step to establish a perfect lawn.
The proper structure of the support layer should form a light soil. This will ensure a proper aeration of the soil and drainage of carbon dioxide, reduce the risk of rotting and facilitate a normal development of the root system of grasses. The pH reaction of the substrate should be 5.5-6.5.
If the lawn is to be established on a sandy ground, it is worth to add to it a carious or peat soil and mix it with a tiller. This will certainly improve the water management – one of the most important factors affecting the development of a beautiful lawn.
Remember! To ensure the best nutrients for the lawn, make an analysis of the substrate. On this basis, determine the program of fertilization. Act consciously and effectively.
Sowing seeds
When to sow grass? Best when it is done in April and May or from the second half of August to the end of September. Then the temperatures are optimal and the risk of desiccation of the top soil layer is small. When planning the exact date of sowing, avoid the rainy and windy weather. Bad weather conditions definitely hinder precise execution of works.
To create a beautiful lawn, the area should be evenly covered with seeds. This can be done manually or by using different types of seed drills. We recommend cross-sowing technique or sowing in two directions – lengthwise and crosswise. The seeds should be located approx. 1 cm at the surface. Mixing them with soil will be facilitated by a spring rake.
After raking the whole area, the surface should be levelled with a garden roller. This should prevent the movement of seeds and reduce the evaporation area.
Remember! Sowing requires diligence and accuracy, which is why you should wait for the right weather conditions.
